THE TRELLISING TOOL: A SIMPLE INNOVATION THAT TRANSFORMED FARMING Leave a comment

Farming has evolved significantly over the years, with new innovations making agricultural work easier, more efficient, and cost-effective. One tool that recently caught my attention is the TAPE TOOL—also known as the TAPENER GUN or TRELLISING TOOL. It’s a simple yet revolutionary device that has transformed the way farmers support their crops.

My First Encounter with the Tape Tool

One day at work, a very enthusiastic gentleman walked into our shop, eager to find a specific farming tool he had recently discovered. He passionately described how this tool worked, but being relatively new to the workplace, I couldn’t quite picture what he was referring to.

Curious, I sought help from my manager. As they talked, I saw a unique-looking tool being pulled from a box. It had a striking red and silver design, with one part resembling a stapler and another part resembling a tape dispenser. My curiosity grew as I listened intently to their conversation.

I soon learned that this tool, the TAPE TOOL, is used for trellising—a gardening technique that helps support climbing plants like tomatoes, cucumbers, grapes, kiwi, blackberries, capsicum, and even flowers. By allowing plants to grow vertically, trellising improves plant health, saves space, and enhances productivity.

How the Tape Tool Works

As my manager demonstrated the tool to the farmer, I was fascinated. Pressing the handle extends a red tape, and pressing it again neatly wraps and staples the tape around the plant stem, securing it to a support. It was a game-changer—fast, efficient, and easy to use!

Surprisingly, despite its effectiveness, the Tapener Gun remains relatively unknown among Kenyan farmers. But that is about to change!

A Farmer’s Success Story with the Tape Tool

Two weeks after the farmer purchased the tool, I decided to follow up and hear about his experience. What he shared was nothing short of eye-opening.

His farm, located in Murang’a County, specializes in greenhouse farming, particularly cucumbers and capsicum (green, red, and yellow varieties). Before discovering the Tape Tool, he relied on bamboo sticks and strings to support his crops. This method was:

Tedious – Requiring five workers for two days per greenhouse
Time-consuming – Workers had to return frequently to re-tie fallen strings
Expensive – High labour costs with repeated work throughout the season

With the Tape Tool, everything changed! Now, he only needs one worker per greenhouse per day, significantly reducing costs and improving efficiency. Even better, his plants look healthier, and he’s anticipating a bumper harvest.

Excited about his success, he’s been spreading the word to fellow farmers, and the Tape Tool has been flying off our shelves ever since!
